Celebrate Color: An Autumn Inspired Ice Cream Top

Celebrate ColorI was really excited when I heard about the Celebrate Color event going on over at Stitched in Color. Fall just happens to be my favorite season! I love the crisp cool mornings, the layered clothes, the fact that I can order a hot chocolate or apple cider at my favorite coffee place and not get attitude from the cashier (yeah, I get that it's a little odd to order these things when it's 95-degrees, just deal with it), but most off all I love the ever changing colors.

The project I settled on was the Oliver + S Ice Cream Top, with a few modifications.
I placed what might be called a circular, pleated mock placket over the yoke, and trimmed it with matching piping and buttons. A scalloped hem was inspired by the reddish flowers in the main print.

The fabric I chose was based off of the autumn colors visible for from our front window.

The main print is Kate Spain's Fandango in Talavera Azul. The pale blues, subtle greens, and rust red colors of this fabric reflect the early fall colors in our area. For the yoke and scalloped hem I used matching kona cotton. I'm not sure exactly what color it is, but the matching thread is called tomato bisque (which in turn inspired tomato bisque and grilled cheese for dinner on Saturday!).

Ava liked her new top, but was less enthusiastic about having her picture taken. She ripped out her bow before we even started and each time the flash went off she said, "No way!" Needless to say, 30+ pictures later I had four pictures which weren't horrifically blurred. I think it's time for a new camera.

I was very pleased with how this top turned out! It has such a whimsical quality to it, and layered with a long-sleeve shirt Ava will be sure to wear it many times this fall.

  1. Very, very, very cute top. All those little details are precious. And, by the way, your daughter strongly reminds me of Aria in these pictures. So fun to remember that little face!
